Energy and energy efficiency are constantly in the headlines with a global drive to reduce consumption and address the environmental challenges. 
 
Renewable energy plays a key part of this and is applied to many schemes in both the developed and developing world. 
 
Natural sources of energy – wind, solar, tidal – can be harnessed, but reliability and predictability is difficult to plan into a national network, so other sources which minimise the impact on the environment are constantly being sought and developed. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

THE RENEWABLES SECTOR Challenges / Opportunities  

One big question is how to generate power from a latent energy source which is renewable (as in – it does not require millennia to regenerate) but also does not harm the environment in which it is being generated? 
 
Also how scalable is the process: if an energy generation method is found in a test plant, will it behave in the same predictable way when enlarged to a commercially-viable version? 
 
Many processes have been tried and tested in laboratory conditions and proved to “function”.  
 
Some of these are taken further to develop test rigs and pilot plants to prove the concept in a more industrial setting. To take these demonstration plants further to become long-term, operable and commercially viable requires yet another set of skills and vision. 
Development of these plants is often hampered due to commercial confidentiality inadvertently limiting application practice whilst properly controlling intellectual property, and sometimes the original developers find it a challenge to adjust from a manual micro-process which they can make frequent fine adjustments, to a full-scale automated system which requires the process to be defined, controllable and safe on a much larger scale. 
 

MATL IN THE RENEWABLES ENERGY SECTOR  

MAT Ltd champions environmental sustainability, and are ISO14001 registered, so the renewable energy sector is an exciting and appropriate area for us to continue to work in. We put this into practice for ourselves, and our main office benefits from solar PV generation and solar thermal water heating. 
 
However these core principles are rolled out into our design and consulting activities, looking for ways in which we can recommend improvements to benefit projects that we engage in. 
 
We have had significant design input into the development of two renewable energy plants which have been transitioning to a commercial-scale demonstration plant. Both processes were based on advanced gasification and designed for use with household waste direct to electricity generation. 
 
We needed to use our expertise from materials handling, process and water industries to bring together viable and practical designs. We were also asked to take part in some unique equipment design specific to the plant with our 3D design capability. 

SECONDARY USES  

 
Other secondary uses have included the introduction of ground heat source to maintain stock chemical tank temperatures throughout the year with minimal energy use and without allowing the chemicals to crystallise. 
 
Handling of bulk materials forms a regular part of the renewable energy sector, and we have experience in port handling facilities to transfer and store bulk pelletised wood dust from ship to rail cargo for power stations.
